Activity 5: Planning a Sketching Trip

Level
· Intermediate / Advanced

Note
· This activity is another good precursor to Sketching Outdoors.

Purpose
· To engage students in exploring the geography of the Rocky Mountains and the locations of some of the artistically important spots within them.
· To engage students in thinking about some of the practical concerns involved in hiking and sketching in the mountains.

Materials
· Map
· Pencils
· Paper

Procedure
· Trip Planning

1. Students may be put into groups and complete this activity as a team.
a) Using the map, locate the places Peter and Catharine went to paint the pictures in this exhibition.
b) Choose two to four locations in close vicinity to each other and plan a sketching trip around them.
c) What is the goal of your trip? To complete a number of sketches? Is it a social trip with friends? Do you want to experience nature? Do you want to rough it or have all the comforts of home?
d) You will have to decide how you will travel. Calculate distances to determine if you need to walk, drive, or take public transportation.
e) What route will you take? Will you need to camp out overnight, or will you stay in lodges? Where will you stay?
f) How long will you be gone? How much food will you need? What will you eat? How will you cook?
g) Who will you go with? Another artist? A friend? Will you need a professional guide to lead you through the mountains? h) What supplies will you need? What sketching supplies will you bring and how will you pack them?

2. Groups will work on their plans and present them to the rest of the class at the end of the session.

Evaluation
· Attention to detail and thinking ahead
· Creativity in dealing with problems
