Canada Day Sidewalk Art

Thursday, July 1, 10:30 AM, FREE

Celebrate Canada's birthday by helping to turn the Whyte Museum's sidewalk into a work of art. Show your national pride by creating your own piece of Canadian-themed sidewalk art. (We use environmentally friendly tempera paint.) Come early, space is limited.

Here is a feast for the senses. Thrill to performances by some of the best emerging musicians of our time as your eyes take in the Grizzly! exhibition in the main gallery. These 45-minute concerts are presented in partnership with The Banff Centre, Music and Sound.

Banff Culture Weekend – Grizzly Day

Saturday, August 7, 1 to 4 PM, included with Museum admission

Meet Maureen Enns, one of the artists featured in our Grizzly! exhibition. Hear the stories behind her inspiring works of art. Visit with a Park Warden and share their experiences working with grizzly bears in the wild. Grizzly Day is part of the 8th annual Banff Culture Weekend celebrations. Doors Open Banff

Sunday, August 8, 1 to 4 PM, FREE

Take a walk through history by visiting some of Banff's oldest and most significant pieces of built heritage. A number of Peter and Catharine Whyte Foundation properties will be open, including: the McGinn residence, Mary Schäffer's Tarry-a-while, Windy Cabin, and Mather Cabin. Guided tours will be offered of the Whyte and Moore homes; pre-booking is available. Doors Open Banff is an annual heritage tourism event hosted by the Banff Heritage Tourism, and there are a multitude of other heritage homes to visit in Banff. Take a Hike! Bow Lake's Art and History

$100 per person (Members $80), includes lunch

Executive Director Michale Lang will lead an exploration of the art and history of beautiful Bow Lake, culminating with a view of Bow Glacier Falls. Following an easy hike along the lake shore with stops to look at art perspectives and wildflowers, the day will conclude with a late lunch at historic Num-Ti-Jah Lodge, the perfect end to a wonderful hike. Participants will meet at Bow Lake parking lot. Bring a snack and plenty of water.

36 Views of My Father

Katherine Govier gives an illustrated talk about the works and life of the great Japanese painter/designers, Hokusai, and his daughter Oei. Was the man who made The Great Wave off Kanagawa the only master in North Star Studio in 19thcentury Edo? Katherine will talk about her research and her novel, The Ghost Brush. Katherine will be on-hand to sign her novel following the presentation.

Take a Hike! Following the Artist's Footsteps

Executive Director Michale Lang will lead this guided hike for all art and nature lovers. Starting from Sargent's Point and taking a moderate hike to Lake McArthur where Carl Rungius painted his award-winning landscape, we will follow in the footsteps of The Group of Seven's J. E. H. MacDonald and other well-known artists. Meet at the Lake O'Hara parking lot. Arrive by 10:15 am. Bring a lunch, plenty of water, prepare for a moderately strenuous day in the outdoors.

Alberta Artist Meet and Greet

Saturday, September 18, 1 – 4 PM, FREE

In celebration of Alberta Arts Days, the Whyte Museum will hold an Artist Meet and Greet afternoon. Dwayne Harty, Colleen Campbell and other artists highlighted in the Grizzly!exhibition will talk about their work in an informal manner. The event also features the opening of the art show and sale, Abundant Alberta. Meet and chat with prominent landscape artists showcased in this exciting art show and sale.

Cathryn and Fran Jenkins: Two Generations Carved in Stone

Here's a unique opportunity to meet mother and daughter team, Fran and Cathryn Jenkins. These renowned sculptors will discuss the process of bringing grizzly bears to life in stone. Hear stories of their encounters with bears in life and art.
