Archival Evidence of Icefront Activity

Successive frontal positions have been determined using data reported by: the Vaux family (pronounced Vox) from 1887-1912, Sherzer, 1904-1906, A.O. Wheeler of the Alpine Club of Canada ca.1931 and 1933, Water Survey of Canada (Dominion Water and Power Bureau - D.W.P.B.) 1945-61, Parks Canada interpreters ca.1972-85 and by the author in 1986, 1997and 2002. Summary icefront data (see Champoux and Ommanney, 1986, Table 1, p.32) show that the Illecillewaet has retreated approximately 800 m since 1887. Retreat stopped sometime between 1963 and 1971 (no surveys were done in that interval) and a readvance of approximately 92 m was measured from 1972-84. More recent frontal activity has been documented by repeat photography.
