Who monitors the glaciers?
Since the 1960s, government scientists have been measuring the yearly balance of winter snow build-up and summer melting of the Peyto Glacier. These "mass balance" surveys are done at only a handful of Canada's glaciers, but they act as a check on the rate at which these water towers are changing.

What is happening at Peyto Glacier?
Repeat survey of the gain and loss of ice at Peyto Glacier (1966 - 95) shows that less snow has been accumulating on the glacier in recent winters. This change is most clearly seen in the1977 - 1995 interval. It seems to be linked with shifts in the temperature of the sea surface in the northern Pacific Ocean.
