Trees at timberline are very sensitive to climate

Individual growth rings provide a biological record of environmental change. Analysis of tree ring-widths has been used to estimate how climate in the Rockies has changed in the last 900 years.

This tree was sampled at timberline near the Columbia Icefields. It lived for 230 yrs (1391 - 1621)
